Muscat, March 2 (NationPress) India faced its first loss in the ongoing Iran conflict as an oil tanker was allegedly targeted in the Gulf of Oman, resulting in the death of an Indian national on board.

The Embassy of India conveyed its profound condolences regarding the unfortunate passing of the Indian national aboard the MKD Vyom. It stated, "The Embassy is actively collaborating with local authorities in Oman to ensure the safe and prompt repatriation of our citizens on the vessel."

"We are dedicated to providing all necessary support in this situation," the Embassy further remarked.

As reported by Oman's official news agency, the oil tanker MKD VYOM, registered under the Republic of the Marshall Islands, was struck by an Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) approximately 52 nautical miles from Oman's coast.

"The vessel was transporting around 59,463 metric tonnes of cargo. The attack resulted in a fire and an explosion in the main engine room, leading to the death of one Indian crew member," the report noted.

The Oman News Agency also reported: "In coordination with the Maritime Security Centre, the tanker's crew of 21—comprising 16 Indian nationals, four Bangladeshi nationals, and one Ukrainian national—was successfully evacuated by the commercial vessel MV SAND, which is under the flag of Panama. Concurrently, a vessel from the Royal Navy of Oman is monitoring the condition of the damaged tanker and issuing necessary navigational alerts to other vessels in the vicinity."

Earlier, Oman's Sultan Haitham bin Tarik engaged in phone discussions with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and French President Emmanuel Macron, addressing the escalating military tensions in the region and their implications for security and stability.

"The conversations underscored the necessity of uniting international efforts to immediately de-escalate tensions and return to dialogue and diplomacy, fostering security and stability," stated Oman's Foreign Ministry.

On Sunday, Oman's Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi participated via videoconference in the 15th extraordinary meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Ministerial Council, chaired by Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, the Bahraini Minister of Foreign Affairs and current President of the Ministerial Council.

During the meeting, attended by Foreign Ministers from GCC member states and the Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Albusaidi reaffirmed Oman's solidarity with other GCC nations regarding their security measures.

"He emphasized the importance of collective action to end the conflict in the region, tackle its root causes and serious consequences, and enhance diplomatic efforts in this regard," noted Oman's Foreign Ministry.
