MoS Kirti Vardhan Singh meets Indian diaspora in Cote d'Ivoire
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh on Saturday, 8 August met members of the Indian community in Abidjan, the commercial capital of Cote d'Ivoire, during an official visit to the West African nation. Singh had arrived in Cote d'Ivoire on Thursday to attend the country's 66th Independence Day celebrations.
Diaspora Engagement in Abidjan
At the community gathering, Singh described the interaction as an opportunity to reconnect with the Indian diaspora. “It was a pleasure to connect with the vibrant Indian community in Abidjan. Their warmth and enthusiasm reaffirmed the enduring bonds between India and its diaspora. The inspiring cultural performances by our young artists beautifully showcased India’s rich heritage and traditions,” he wrote on X.
India at Cote d'Ivoire's Independence Day Parade
On Friday, Singh attended the official 66th Independence Day celebrations and conveyed India’s commitment to the bilateral relationship. Notably, an Indian Army marching contingent participated in the country’s military parade — a first-of-its-kind gesture that the Indian Embassy in Cote d'Ivoire described as ‘spectacular’. The contingent, comprising 60 officers and other ranks from the Regiment of Artillery, was commanded by Major Sandeep Dhillon and arrived aboard an Indian Air Force (IAF) IL-76 aircraft.
The embassy stated that “the invitation to the Indian marching contingent by the Ivorian government is a testament to the growing defence cooperation between India and Cote d’Ivoire.”
Bilateral Talks with Ivorian Foreign Minister
Earlier on Friday, Singh held talks with Niale Kaba, Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cote d'Ivoire. The two sides exchanged views on deepening ties and expanding bilateral cooperation across areas of mutual interest. Singh described the meeting as a “productive exchange of views on further strengthening the longstanding and close ties between India and Cote d’Ivoire.”
India-Cote d'Ivoire Ties: Growing Footprint
The visit signals India’s intensifying diplomatic outreach to West Africa. The deployment of an armed forces contingent for a foreign nation’s independence day parade underscores the strategic dimension of the relationship, going beyond traditional trade and cultural links. This comes amid India’s broader push to deepen engagement across the African continent, a priority that has gained fresh momentum since the India-Africa Forum Summit.
Singh also conveyed formal felicitations on behalf of India: “May Cote d’Ivoire continue to progress on the path of peace, progress and prosperity.” The visit is expected to pave the way for follow-up engagements on defence, trade, and people-to-people ties between the two nations.
