Bangkok, April 21 (NationPress) India's progress in development and innovative solutions are being showcased during the 81st session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) which commenced in Bangkok on Monday.
The event, running from April 21-25, is centered around the theme 'Regional Cooperation for Resilient and Sustainable Urban Development in Asia and the Pacific'.
Leading the Indian delegation at the session, which includes representatives from the Ministry of Urban Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce, is India's Ambassador to Thailand, Nagesh Singh.
During the country statement, Indian Deputy Permanent Representative to UNESCAP, Paulomi Tripathi, emphasized the successes and experiences from India’s development journey, particularly in urban development, the transformative application of digital technologies for inclusive growth, and India's unwavering commitment to assist other developing nations in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through various initiatives that promote South-South Cooperation.
India is also participating in the Urban Innovations Fair at the session, presenting innovative development solutions and showcasing the impactful initiatives under the India-UN Development Partnership Fund in Asia and the Pacific, as stated by the Indian Embassy on X.
Asia and the Pacific, which houses over 2.2 billion urban residents and numerous major megacities, is recognized as the world’s urban powerhouse. However, the region also confronts several challenges, including slowing population growth and significant vulnerabilities such as economic instability, climate risks, and social inequalities, necessitating comprehensive sustainable development strategies.
The session will highlight the essential role of regional cooperation in tackling these challenges and promote collective approaches to fulfill the aspirations of global development agendas, including the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement, and the New Urban Agenda.
The theme study investigates the future of urbanization in Asia and the Pacific, examining the significant transformations within the region’s urban environment. It draws attention to the demographic changes, including population ageing, and the ongoing issues of urban poverty and inequality.
