Tehran, May 5 (NationPress) Iran has adjusted the death toll from a significant explosion at its primary commercial port last month to 57 from 70. State television has reported two arrests related to the incident.
The semi-official Tasnim news agency cited Hormozgan province's Chief Justice Mojtaba Qahremani, who stated that the revised figure for the April 26 explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port accounts for 46 identified bodies and 11 individuals still unaccounted for.
Qahremani elaborated that the initial death count was adjusted after forensic investigations revealed that some recovered body parts belonged to the same victims. Additionally, a specialized working group has been formed to address the cases of the missing.
According to state television, two individuals, including a government official, have been detained in connection with the explosion.
The blast and the resulting fire caused injuries to over 1,200 individuals, as reported by the Iranian Red Crescent Society, which confirmed that search and rescue operations at the site concluded on Sunday, according to Xinhua.
Authorities have identified safety oversights as contributing factors to the explosion.
A statement from provincial crisis management highlighted lapses in safety protocols and passive defense strategies, while Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni referred to instances of “certain negligence” last Monday.
Shahid Rajaee Port, situated in southern Hormozgan province, serves as Iran's largest maritime center, managing the majority of the nation’s container traffic and over half of its total trade.
