Jerusalem, Nov 21 (NationPress) Israel anticipates that the United States will ensure its access to superior US military technology, as stated by a representative from the Prime Minister's Office regarding the US's intention to sell F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia.
Currently, Israel is the sole Middle Eastern nation operating the advanced stealth fighter jets, and US legislation mandates that any arms transactions in the area must not compromise Israel's “qualitative military edge” over its regional adversaries, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
“The United States and Israel have a long-standing agreement that Israel will maintain its qualitative edge in defense matters,” spokesperson Shosh Bedrosian informed the press.
“This principle was valid yesterday, holds true today, and the Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is confident it will remain so in the future,” she continued.
This statement marks the first official reaction from the Israeli government concerning the proposed sale, which was unveiled by US President Donald Trump during a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud at the White House. The suggested agreement entails the transfer of up to 48 F-35s, indicating a significant shift after years of US reluctance under prior administrations.
Although Israel and Saudi Arabia lack formal diplomatic relations, the Saudi crown prince expressed a desire to normalize ties with Israel during his visit to Washington, emphasizing the importance of a “clear path toward a two-state solution” that includes the establishment of a Palestinian state.
Netanyahu and his far-right administration have consistently opposed the formation of a Palestinian state.
