The Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) in Tel Aviv hosted a hands-on mehndi (henna) workshop on 19 August 2026, giving participants a direct encounter with one of India's most enduring artistic traditions, the Embassy of India confirmed. The event was held as part of a broader countdown to India's 80th Independence Day celebrations.

What the Workshop Covered

Participants at the immersive session explored henna motifs and patterns that have been passed down through generations across India. Attendees were guided through traditional designs before creating their own mehndi patterns, turning the evening into an exercise in both cultural discovery and hands-on creativity.

Cultural Exchange Programme Backdrop

The workshop sits within a larger diplomatic framework. One of the key outcomes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's landmark visit to Israel earlier this year was the finalisation of a Cultural Exchange Programme (CEP) between the two countries for the period 2026–2029. The CEP covers music, theatre, visual arts, dance, and other creative disciplines through festivals, workshops, and expert exchanges.

During their bilateral meeting, PM Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu underscored that lasting friendship between nations is deepened through cultural and sporting connections. The India–Israel Joint Statement issued on 26 February 2026 also committed both sides to expanding cooperation in cinema, including joint film and series productions and exchanges between creators.

Independence Day Celebrations in Jaffa

Separately, over the weekend, the Embassy of India joined India's 80th Independence Day celebrations at St. Anthony's Church in Jaffa, organised by the Indian Konkani community alongside Father Santhosh Lobo and church members. The gathering drew approximately 1,000 people.

India's Ambassador J P Singh addressed the crowd, acknowledging the dedication and contribution of the Indian working community in Israel, with particular recognition for caregivers. 'He reaffirmed the Embassy's steadfast support for the Indian community and assured them that the Embassy remains a home away from home,' the Indian Embassy posted on X. Cultural performances in Kannada, Goan, and Hindi followed, reflecting the diversity of the Indian Konkani diaspora.

Significance for India–Israel Ties

The mehndi workshop and Independence Day events together signal a deliberate push to deepen people-to-people contact between India and Israel at a time when the two governments have formalised a multi-year cultural roadmap. With the 2026–2029 CEP now in place, such grassroots cultural engagements are expected to become more frequent and structured in the months ahead.
