Damascus, Feb 9 (NationPress) Israel executed airstrikes on military installations in the outskirts of the Syrian capital, Damascus, focusing on facilities in the Deir Ali region, as reported by local media.
The assault struck an area close to the capital, while the Israeli military asserted that its aircraft targeted a munitions depot associated with Hamas in the same vicinity. No immediate casualties were reported, according to Xinhua news agency citing Sham FM.
Additionally, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based conflict monitoring group, indicated that Israeli strikes impacted storage facilities linked to the First Division and Brigade 166 in Al-Kiswah, located in southern Syria.
The airstrikes resulted in significant explosions, igniting fires at the targeted locations, though the casualty count and damage extent remain uncertain.
This incident is part of a persistent trend of Israeli airstrikes on military establishments in Syria, frequently aimed at weapon depots and positions tied to Iran-backed groups and Palestinian factions.
Israeli officials have consistently expressed their resolve to thwart arms transfers to Hezbollah and other militant organizations operating within Syrian borders.
No immediate response was provided by Syrian authorities regarding the assault.
Earlier in January, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that the nation's military forces would maintain a presence in Syria for an “unlimited time”.
“The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) will remain at the peak of Mount Hermon and in the buffer zone indefinitely,” Katz declared during a visit to military positions established by Israel at the summit of Mount Hermon.
He asserted that this strategy is designed “to secure the safety of Israel's citizens.”
“I came here to ensure that the IDF is adequately prepared for both defense and offense for prolonged deployment at the Mount Hermon sites,” he added.
