New Delhi, Oct 10 (NationPress) In an effort to improve accessibility and inclusivity, the Union government has introduced several new initiatives for the National Tele-Mental Health Programme (NTMHP), known as Tele MANAS. This includes enhancements to the app's features specifically aimed at aiding visually impaired users.

The new features were launched by Union Health Minister JP Nadda on the occasion of World Mental Health Day 2025. These upgrades encompass a multi-lingual user interface, a chatbot, improved accessibility, and an emergency module within the Tele MANAS app.

The Health Ministry noted, "Acknowledging the challenges that persons with disabilities and vulnerable groups face in accessing digital health services, the app now incorporates accessibility features to create a more user-friendly experience for visually impaired individuals."

A new chatbot feature named ‘Asmi’ has been introduced to allow users to interact with the app and seek assistance or information about mental health. Additionally, content aimed at emergency responses has been integrated to provide timely guidance during critical situations.

Beyond English and Hindi, the Tele MANAS app will now be accessible in 10 regional languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Odia, and Punjabi, as stated by the Ministry.

“A sound mind leads to a sound body, and a healthy mind along with a healthy body contributes to a healthy nation. India is dedicated to providing equitable, affordable, and inclusive access to mental health services,” Nadda remarked during the launch.

“With these new features in the Tele-MANAS app, we are enhancing our ability to effectively respond to mental health emergencies and expanding digital innovations to reach every part of the country. Normalizing conversations around mental health is essential to diminish stigma and emphasize mental health as a vital component of public health in India,” he further added.

Prof. T K Srikanth, Principal Investigator of Tele MANAS at the International Institute of Information Technology in Bangalore (IIT-B), emphasized that the upgrades to the mental health app will facilitate a seamless exchange of information.

“Data security and privacy are fundamental to the system, and the app's modular design will allow for future enhancements,” Srikanth stated.

Additionally, the government has appointed Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone as the mental health ambassador to raise awareness about access to mental health services.

“Collaborating with Deepika Padukone will broaden awareness about mental health challenges in India, normalize discussions to reduce stigma, and underscore mental health as a critical element of public health,” Nadda indicated.

Since its launch, Tele MANAS has managed approximately 28 lakh calls, with trained counselors providing assistance in over 20 languages.

“On average, around 4,000 individuals reach out for support daily, showcasing the effectiveness of this service in addressing mental health concerns. The nearly equal representation of men and women seeking help indicates that awareness is increasing across all demographics,” Nadda concluded.
