New Delhi, July 25 (NationPress) The Tele-MANAS toll-free number, introduced as a component of India's national tele-mental health initiative, has successfully received over 2,382,000 calls from its inception in 2022 up to mid-March 2025, as disclosed in Parliament on Friday.
The Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, provided this information in a written statement to the Rajya Sabha, noting that 53 Tele-MANAS cells have been established across 36 states. These cells offer 24/7 mental health services in as many as 20 languages.
“The helpline has managed more than 2,382,000 calls,” he stated.
The toll-free number, 14416, was launched on World Mental Health Day on October 10, 2022, aimed at addressing the escalating mental health challenges in India.
Tele-MANAS is a mobile application designed to create a comprehensive platform for mental health support, addressing a range of issues from general well-being to serious mental disorders.
“Moreover, the government has introduced video consultation services under Tele-MANAS, enhancing the existing audio calling option,” Jadhav highlighted.
To bolster mental health services, the government has rolled out the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP), which encompasses the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP)—approved for implementation in 767 districts.
The government is also enhancing mental healthcare services at the primary health level.
“Over 177,000 Sub Health Centres (SHCs) and Primary Health Centres (PHCs) have been upgraded to Ayushman Arogya Mandirs. Mental health services are now included in the service packages offered at these centers,” Jadhav stated.
In India, there exist 47 government-run mental hospitals, including 3 Central Mental Health Institutions: the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences in Bengaluru, the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health in Tezpur, Assam, and the Central Institute of Psychiatry in Ranchi. Mental health services are also available at all AIIMS, according to the Minister.
