Ankara, July 20 (NationPress) Israel's ongoing actions within Syrian territory are exacerbating the crisis in Syria, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated, as reported by the semi-official Anadolu Agency.
During a phone discussion with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio about the situation in southern Syria, Fidan emphasized, “Any assault on Syria's territorial integrity, unity, and sovereignty negatively impacts efforts for regional peace.”
He also highlighted the necessity of adhering to the mutual agreements established by the involved parties, which should encompass an immediate and extensive nationwide ceasefire that was declared earlier in the day by Syrian authorities.
On Saturday morning, the Syrian authorities issued a statement indicating that the truce was designed to uphold national unity and safeguard civilians amid “critical circumstances,” labeling the initiative as a national and humanitarian duty.
This announcement followed US Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack’s disclosure on X, indicating that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Syrian interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa had consented to halt hostilities, facilitated by Rubio.
Earlier on Tuesday, Israel conducted a series of airstrikes targeting Syrian military convoys in and around the southern city of Sweida, resulting in casualties among personnel and escalating the ongoing deadly confrontations between local Druze armed factions, Bedouin tribes, and forces of the Syrian interim government.
Syria condemned Israel's involvement, asserting that the strikes led to the deaths of both military personnel and civilians.
