According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), "Kim ... sent a message of condolence to Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin ... on December 8 regarding the passing of Aleksandr Ivanovich Matsegora, Russian extraordinary ambassador to the DPRK, on December 6, 2025."
The acronym DPRK stands for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the official designation of North Korea.
In his message, Kim expressed "deep condolences" to Putin, the Russian leadership, and Matsegora's grieving family over his "sudden demise," as stated by the KCNA.
"Comrade Matsegora was a close friend and comrade to the DPRK people who dedicated his entire life to fostering DPRK-Russia friendly relations for over 30 years," Kim noted.
He also emphasized that the bilateral relations between the two nations, which have evolved into a robust alliance, are closely linked to Matsegora's "dedicated efforts."
"The unexpected passing of the ambassador at a time when the development of relations between the DPRK and Russia has entered a significant historic phase is, indeed, a heartbreaking event and a substantial loss," the KCNA quoted Kim as stating.
"His noble life ... will forever shine and be cherished by the people of both nations."
Earlier, Russia's foreign ministry announced that Matsegora had passed away last Saturday at the age of 70, although they did not disclose the cause.
Having commenced his career as a staff member at the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang in 1999, Matsegora served as Russia's chief envoy to North Korea for a decade, starting in 2015. He recently played a vital role as Pyongyang and Moscow aligned closely following North Korea's deployment of troops to support Russia in its conflict against Ukraine, Yonhap news agency reported.
In a separate message, North Korea's Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui expressed condolences to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, mentioning that Matsegora "made a remarkable contribution" to the friendly and cooperative relations between the two nations, as per the KCNA.
"The name of Comrade Ambassador Matsegora, who was a witness and contributor to the history of DPRK-Russia friendly relations, will be remembered eternally," Choe stated, expressing hope for peace for Matsegora's grieving family.
