North Korea Intensifies Succession Moves for Kim's Daughter, Says Seoul Intelligence
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, April 6 (NationPress) It seems that North Korea is ramping up efforts to position leader Kim Jong-un's daughter, Ju-ae, as his potential successor, according to South Korea's intelligence agency, which informed lawmakers on Monday about her recent public engagement where she operated a new battle tank alongside her father.
The National Intelligence Service (NIS) shared this insight during a confidential briefing to the parliamentary intelligence committee, as reported by Reps. Park Sun-won of the Democratic Party and Lee Seong-kweun of the People Power Party, according to Yonhap news agency.
“Ju-ae has made notable appearances in military-related events recently,” the lawmakers cited the NIS as stating. “This is perceived as an attempt to mitigate doubts surrounding a female successor and to accelerate the formulation of a succession narrative.”
In the previous month, North Korea's state media showcased Kim overseeing a drill that featured new battle tanks, including images of his daughter, believed to be in her teens, driving one with her father and military personnel aboard.
The NIS opined that this report aims to highlight Ju-ae's military competencies and pay tribute to Kim, who was also depicted driving a tank in state media prior to taking over from his father, the late Kim Jong-il.
Ju-ae has increasingly been regarded as a viable successor due to her growing presence alongside her father during significant domestic events. The Kim family has maintained control over North Korea for nearly eight decades across three generations.
In a separate assessment, the spy agency speculated that the ongoing US-Israeli conflict regarding Iran could conclude by late April, contingent on the outcomes of potential US military actions in the coming days.
US President Donald Trump reiterated threats on Sunday (US time) to dismantle Iran's power infrastructure and bridges if the nation does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
