Washington, May 7 (NationPress) Democrat lawmaker Raja Krishnamoorthi declared on Wednesday his candidacy for the US Senate. If successful, he will become just the second American of Indian heritage to be elected to this prestigious body.
"I have dedicated myself to advocating for families similar to those I grew up with—individuals who simply seek an opportunity to work diligently and achieve their aspirations," Krishnamoorthi stated in a video message introducing his Senate campaign.
His campaign will officially kick off with a series of events throughout Illinois on Friday.
Currently, Krishnamoorthi serves as a representative in the House from Illinois, and he is competing for the Senate seat previously held by Dick Durbin, a long-time member from this strongly Democratic state.
Born in New Delhi, Krishnamoorthi moved to the United States at the age of three. He pursued legal studies and later became the Policy Director for Barack Obama's victorious Senate campaign. In 2016, he was elected to the House of Representatives, where he quickly gained national recognition, notably coining the term 'Samosa Caucus' for a group of four House members of Indian descent—Ami Bera, Ro Khanna, and Pramila Jayapal. This group has since expanded to six with the elections of Shri Thanedar and Suhas Subramanyam.
If elected, Krishnamoorthi would be the second Indian-American to serve in the Senate, following Kamala Harris, who secured her seat from California in the same election year as Krishnamoorthi along with Khanna and Jayapal. Notably, the original Samosa Caucus also included Harris, who left shortly after to join Joe Biden's presidential campaign and subsequently served as US Vice President from 2021 to 2025.
