Putrajaya, May 25 (NationPress) Malaysia and Laos have established a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing cross-border trade between Penang Port and the Thanaleng Dry Port (TDP) through a combination of rail and sea transport. This significant development was marked by the signing of a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) here on Sunday.
The MoC was signed by Azman Shah Mohd Yusof, CEO of MMC Port Holdings Sdn Bhd, and Chanthone Sitthixay, CEO of PTL Holding Co. Ltd., with the ceremony attended by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his Lao counterpart Sonexay Siphandone, who is in Malaysia for an official visit prior to the 46th ASEAN Summit, as reported by Xinhua.
This collaboration highlights Malaysia's increasing importance as a regional logistics hub and aligns with the goal of boosting regional connectivity. The partnership aims to facilitate multimodal integration, reducing transit times, lowering logistics costs, enhancing supply chain efficiency, and stimulating regional economic growth, according to Azman Shah.
"We are delighted to support TDP's initiatives to help Laos achieve its national strategy of transitioning from a land-locked to a land-linked nation. This partnership positions Malaysia as a key trade gateway between mainland Southeast Asia and international markets, while assisting Laos in becoming a land-linked economy," he stated.
Additionally, Anwar held discussions with his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Minh Chinh, who is also visiting Malaysia. The two leaders oversaw the signing of documents to strengthen cooperation in energy, education, and regional integration.
"This visit illustrates our mutual commitment to enhancing bilateral relations, expanding strategic cooperation, and reinforcing solidarity among ASEAN nations," Anwar remarked following the meeting.
As the chair of ASEAN for 2025, Malaysia is set to host the 46th ASEAN Summit, along with the 2nd ASEAN-GCC Summit and the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, scheduled from Monday to Tuesday, as stated by the Foreign Ministry.
"Malaysia is dedicated to building a united, inclusive, and forward-looking ASEAN Community that meets the needs of its citizens and is resilient to both regional and global challenges," the ministry added.
