Mexican Consulates to Enhance Assistance for Nationals Amid US Deportations

Mexico City, Dec 13 (NationPress) Mexican consulates located in the United States are set to bolster legal assistance for Mexican nationals to guarantee they are well-informed about their rights and the procedures related to deportation, as stated by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Referring to the President's remarks made on Friday, this initiative is a reaction to ongoing threats of large-scale deportations by US President-elect Donald Trump, who has criticized Mexico for allegedly insufficient measures to curb illegal immigration, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

"There are regulations governing the deportation of nationals back to Mexico. It is not a scenario where police detain them and then send them to the border on the same day. There are standards and protocols that must be adhered to, and individuals cannot be deported without valid reasons," Sheinbaum explained during a routine press conference.

"We are enhancing the capabilities of our consulates in the United States and elevating the level of legal support," she added.

The government plans to disseminate contact information for the consulates, ensuring that Mexican nationals can receive help in the event of deportation.

"We are in Mexico ready to welcome Mexicans and making all necessary preparations," Sheinbaum stated if they face deportation.

Previously in November, President Sheinbaum expressed her readiness for potential mass deportations of migrants from the US, which President-elect Trump has indicated will take place upon his inauguration.

"Should deportations occur, we will be prepared to receive the Mexicans, and we have a plan in place for that," Sheinbaum told reporters, as quoted by Xinhua news agency.

Condemning the notion of "migrants being treated like criminals," she emphasized, "that is why justice institutions exist globally" to safeguard fundamental rights.

The government is fortifying the network of Mexican consulates throughout the United States to better defend migrants facing deportation risks, she noted.

Trump, scheduled to take office on January 20, 2025, has threatened to implement stricter policies to reduce the influx of undocumented migrants crossing the US-Mexico border.
