Mexico City, June 10 (NationPress) - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called on US authorities to adhere to legal standards regarding deportation processes and to uphold human dignity, in light of the recent large-scale migrant roundups and ensuing protests in Los Angeles, California.

During her daily morning press briefing, accompanied by Juan Ramon de la Fuente, Mexico's Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Sheinbaum addressed the protests occurring in Los Angeles, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Her statement outlined five initiatives that the Mexican government is implementing to safeguard the rights of Mexican migrants residing in the United States.

She emphasized, “The government of Mexico will not tolerate actions that violate human rights,” and made a “respectful yet firm” appeal for US officials to act in accordance with due process and the respect of human dignity.

Sheinbaum further stated, “We do not endorse violent actions as a means of protest... we urge the Mexican community to engage in peaceful actions and resist provocations,” adding that most Mexicans in Los Angeles live and work there legally, and that the US economy “requires their contributions.”

She reiterated Mexico’s steadfast dedication to protecting the human rights of Mexicans abroad, irrespective of their immigration status. “Through our consular services, we provide legal assistance and support to ensure Mexicans receive equitable treatment,” she noted.

According to the foreign affairs secretary, approximately 42 Mexicans have been detained in the Los Angeles protests, including 37 men and five women.

Recent demonstrations have seen over 1,000 protesters clashing with National Guard troops in downtown Los Angeles, as they voiced opposition to the immigration raids that have swept across California over the weekend.
