New Delhi, March 20 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt congratulations to Anutin Charnvirakul following his election as the new Prime Minister of Thailand and expressed his eagerness to collaborate closely with him.
PM Modi emphasized that he and Charnvirakul will work towards strengthening the strategic alliance between India and Thailand.
In his message on X, PM Modi said, "Warmest congratulations to Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul on being elected as the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand. I am keen to work closely with him. Together, we will enhance the multifaceted India-Thailand Strategic Partnership. Our relationship is grounded in a shared civilizational heritage, strong cultural ties, and vibrant people-to-people connections. India and Thailand are united in our common goals for peace, progress, and prosperity for our nations."
Modi's congratulatory note followed Charnvirakul's successful re-election as Thailand's PM, where he secured a simple majority in the House of Representatives on Thursday.
Charnvirakul, representing the Bhumjaithai Party, holds the majority in the newly-elected House and contested against Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, the leader of the People's Party, which came in second in the February elections, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.
During a roll call vote, Charnvirakul garnered 293 votes, exceeding the simple majority of 499 members required for approval, according to House Speaker Sophon Zaram. Zaram noted that Ruengpanyawut received 119 votes.
In his address, Charnvirakul reassured parliament members and senators of his commitment to collaborate with all representatives to promote the prosperity and public welfare of the Thai people.
Charnvirakul is awaiting endorsement from Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn to formally begin his new term as the 32nd Prime Minister of Thailand.
Having assumed office in September last year, Charnvirakul became the Prime Minister following a parliamentary vote after the Thailand Constitutional Court disqualified former Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra for constitutional violations related to ethics.
