Johannesburg, Nov 23 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a bilateral discussion with his Japanese counterpart Sanae Takaichi during the G20 Summit held in Johannesburg on Sunday. They explored avenues to enhance bilateral cooperation in critical areas such as innovation, defence, and talent mobility.
Terming the meeting with Takaichi as "productive", PM Modi emphasized that a "strong India-Japan" partnership is essential for a better world. This meeting marked the first interaction between PM Modi and PM Takaichi since she took office as Japan's Prime Minister.
"Had a productive meeting with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of Japan. We discussed ways to add momentum to bilateral cooperation in areas such as innovation, defence, talent mobility, and more. We are also looking to enhance trade ties between our nations. A strong India-Japan partnership is vital for a better planet," PM Modi shared on X.
On October 29, PM Modi had a phone conversation with Takaichi, extending his best wishes on her new role. The leaders exchanged ideas on advancing the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, focusing on economic security, defence collaboration, and talent mobility.

I congratulated her on assuming office and discussed our shared vision for advancing the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, with focus on economic security, defence cooperation, and talent mobility. We agreed that stronger India–Japan ties are vital for global peace, stability, and prosperity,” PM Modi noted on X.
During the 25-minute telephonic conversation, Takaichi expressed Japan’s commitment to collaborate with India in realizing a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific", including through Quad, as stated by Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Takaichi is eager to work alongside PM Modi to open a new golden chapter in the Japan-India Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
On October 27, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar met with Japanese counterpart Motegi Toshimitsu during the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Both leaders discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and agreed to work closely to implement a joint vision for the next decade of India-Japan cooperation.
