Brasilia, July 7 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged the BRICS nations to come together to ensure the responsible deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI), underlining the critical need to harmonize innovation with effective governance.
While addressing the Outreach Session on Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence at the 17th BRICS Summit, the Prime Minister highlighted the necessity for an inclusive and ethically oriented AI framework within the group.
As noted by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Secretary (Economic Relations) Dammu Ravi, PM Modi emphasized that BRICS should ensure that AI governance emphasizes both innovation and protective measures.
"In India, we view AI as a means to enhance human values and capabilities," the Prime Minister remarked, adding that India's perspective on AI is guided by the principle of 'AI for All' and is actively implemented across various sectors.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who also participated in the session, warned against AI becoming 'a club of the few'. He asserted, "AI must be advantageous for everyone, especially for developing nations, which should have a genuine voice in global AI governance."
However, he cautioned that effective and equitable AI governance cannot be realized without addressing systemic disparities within the global framework.
"We cannot govern AI effectively -- and fairly -- without tackling deeper, structural imbalances in our global system," he pointed out, specifically mentioning institutions like the UN Security Council.
Guterres called for reforms in global governance systems, noting that the world is currently multipolar and that multilateral governance structures, including the Security Council and international financial institutions, must be remodeled to reflect contemporary realities.
During the session, PM Modi reaffirmed India's commitment to a multipolar world and the pivotal role BRICS can play in shaping it.
Commenting on the session, Secretary Ravi stated, "In the dialogue on strengthening multilateralism, economic and financial affairs, and artificial intelligence, the Prime Minister asserted that diversity and multipolarity are respected strengths of BRICS. He suggested that BRICS could significantly influence the formation of a multipolar world."
"In this context, he proposed a few initiatives, including the creation of a science and research repository within the BRICS framework by Global South countries to prioritize securing and fortifying the resilience of critical mineral supply chains, and for the BRICS bloc to focus on responsible AI," he added.
The proposed initiative aims to enhance the resilience of critical mineral supply chains, particularly benefiting countries of the Global South.
India is poised to take over the BRICS chairmanship in 2026 and will host the 'AI Impact Summit'. PM Modi extended an invitation to the BRICS nations to take part in this significant AI summit.
