Bhubaneswar, July 14 (NationPress) The condition of the victim, a student of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, Balasore, who is currently receiving medical care at AIIMS Bhubaneswar after a tragic self-immolation attempt on Saturday, is still critical, according to Dillip Kumar Parida, Medical Superintendent of AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

The victim, pursuing a B.Ed degree, took this drastic action due to alleged sexual harassment by the Head of the Department (HOD), Samir Kumar Sahu.

In a statement to the press, Parida mentioned, “The girl is under continuous care. Our specialists assessed her condition this morning and consulted with medical professionals from AIIMS Delhi. Her state is still critical, with no signs of improvement. As previously indicated, the first 72 hours are crucial for her recovery. We are continuing fluid replacement. Dialysis was performed yesterday and may be necessary again today.”

Parida also updated that more than 24 hours have elapsed since the critical 72-hour window began after the victim was admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

The victim has sustained over 90 percent burn injuries and is fighting for her life in the ICU of the burn center at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

It is significant to note that the victim set herself on fire after dousing herself in petrol in front of the Principal's office on Saturday. She was initially taken to Balasore Medical College but was later transferred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment.

Before her self-immolation attempt, the victim organized a sit-in protest near the college campus, demanding action against the accused HOD, Samir Kumar Sahu, for his alleged misconduct.

She was distressed by the lack of action from the college authorities despite filing a formal complaint against Sahu.

Sahu was promptly arrested by Sahadevkhunta Police following a case registration under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including 108 (abetment to suicide), 75(1)(iii) (sexual harassment), and more.

Additionally, the Principal of FM College, Dillip Kumar Ghose, has been suspended for not handling the situation appropriately.

Point of View

I emphasize the necessity of a thorough investigation into this distressing incident. The safety and well-being of students must be prioritized, and educational institutions should take immediate measures to support victims of harassment. We stand with the affected individuals and demand justice.
