Bhubaneswar, July 14 (NationPress) In a significant turn of events regarding the tragic incident involving a self-immolation attempt by a B.Ed student from Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore, authorities have apprehended the principal, Dillip Kumar Ghose, on Monday.
Previously, he had been suspended from his position by the state's Higher Education Department on Saturday due to his inadequate response to the incident.
This development arises amidst escalating public outrage and an increasing demand for justice in a case that has deeply affected Odisha's educational landscape.
The victim attempted to take her own life by igniting herself in front of the principal's office on Saturday, protesting against alleged sexual harassment by the Head of Department (HoD), Samir Kumar Sahu.
After suffering over 90% burn injuries, she was initially taken to Balasore Medical College but was later transferred to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, for specialized care.
Prior to her tragic act, the student had conducted a sit-in demonstration on the college grounds, demanding action against the accused HoD, Samir Kumar Sahu, for his purported misconduct.
She was distressed that no measures were taken against Sahu despite her filing a formal complaint.
In light of the situation, Sahu was swiftly arrested by the Sahadevkhunta Police following the registration of a case against him under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including 108 (abetment to suicide) and 75(1)(iii) (sexual harassment).
