MoS Pabitra Margherita attends Jamaica National Day reception in New Delhi
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita on Friday, 21 August attended the Jamaican National Day reception hosted by the High Commission of Jamaica in New Delhi, reaffirming India's growing diplomatic engagement with the Caribbean nation.
What MoS Margherita Said
Sharing his participation on X, Margherita said he conveyed greetings to the government and people of Jamaica and expressed his intent to deepen ties in both bilateral and multilateral forums. 'Looking forward to continued deepening of our relationship in bilateral and multilateral fora,' he wrote in his post.
The Jaishankar Visit That Set the Stage
The reception follows a landmark diplomatic milestone: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited Jamaica in May — the first-ever official visit by an Indian External Affairs Minister to the island nation. During that visit, Jaishankar and Jamaican Prime Minister jointly inaugurated an electronic scoreboard gifted by India to Sabina Park, the historic cricket ground in Kingston. 'The India-Jamaica story is written in runs, written in respect, written in friendship,' Jaishankar said at the occasion.
Key Deliverables from the May Visit
Jaishankar held comprehensive talks with his Jamaican counterpart Kamina J. Smith, reviewing the full range of bilateral relations and identifying new avenues for partnership. India announced it would supply 30 dialysis units, 40 fishing boats with engines, 200 GPS devices, and related equipment to Jamaica to support recovery following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa. India also handed over 10 BHISHM (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hita and Maitri) emergency medical units to the Caribbean nation.
MoUs and Expanding Cooperation
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that India and Jamaica signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering health cooperation, solarisation of The Hugh Lawson Shearer Building, and broadcasting. Both sides also reviewed implementation of existing agreements in digital transformation, culture, sports, and digital payments, with emphasis on delivering tangible outcomes. Priority sectors for expanded cooperation include healthcare, infrastructure, digitalisation, agriculture, education, tourism, and capacity building.
Capacity Building and ITEC Expansion
India reiterated its commitment to the bilateral relationship by increasing ITEC training slots — particularly for defence training — from 6 to 34. Capacity building through ICCR scholarships and digital learning platforms such as e-VidyaBharati and iGOT Karmyogi was also discussed. This comes amid India's broader push to strengthen South-South cooperation and expand its diplomatic footprint in the Caribbean and Latin American regions. As India deepens these ties, the next steps in implementation of the signed MoUs will be closely watched by both sides.
