Washington, March 2 (NationPress) As tensions grow between the US and its European partners regarding the Ukraine situation, Elon Musk, a close adviser to former President Donald Trump and head of the Department of Government Efficiency, has openly advocated for the United States to withdraw from both NATO and the UN.
Responding to a post by political commentator and MAGA activist Gunther Eagleman, Musk stated, "I agree" regarding the call to exit these international organizations. Eagleman shared a message from Republican Senator Mike Lee, who has also urged for this departure.
In February, Senator Lee introduced the Disengaging Entirely from the United Nations Debacle (DEFUND) Act, aiming for a complete US withdrawal from the UN, labeling the organization a "platform for tyrants" that undermines America and its allies. He argued that despite ample funding, the UN has failed to prevent wars, genocides, human rights abuses, and pandemics.
Musk reinforced Lee’s position in a post on X, asserting that the US "provides way too much funding to the UN and associated entities".
This isn’t Musk’s first critique of US involvement in NATO; just last month, he described it as "anachronistic" and irrelevant in today’s geopolitical landscape. He further questioned why American taxpayers should shoulder a substantial part of Europe’s defense costs, noting that the US covers nearly 67 percent of NATO’s military expenses while only allocating 3.5 percent of its GDP to defense.
Former President Trump has also voiced concerns about NATO, pushing for increased defense spending from member nations and threatening withdrawal due to the perceived financial burden on the US for European security.
Additionally, Musk has commented on other geopolitical matters. He shared a poll he conducted on October 3, 2022, regarding peace proposals between Russia and Ukraine, stating: "What I said over 2 years ago was that Ukraine should seek peace or suffer severe loss of life for no gains."
He criticized Ukrainian President Zelensky, suggesting his choices have led to unnecessary suffering and referenced the fallout from their previous interactions. In the poll, Musk proposed holding elections in annexed regions under UN supervision, allowing Russia to withdraw if that's the people's choice; asserting Crimea's status as part of Russia since 1783, ensuring water supply to Crimea, and maintaining Ukraine's neutrality.
Musk noted the poll results, which showed 40.9 percent in favor and 59.1 percent against his proposal, stating: "This is highly likely to be the outcome in the end – just a question of how many die before then."
Continuing his critique of Zelensky, Musk shared a report about President Joe Biden becoming frustrated with Zelensky’s continued demands, along with a cartoon illustrating a dilemma involving Zelensky. Musk commented, "Zelensky damaged himself severely in the eyes of the public. Just a fact", referring to a CNN report indicating a rise in public opinion against US support for Ukraine.
