Dhaka, Aug 20 (NationPress) A significant rift has emerged within the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Bangladesh, as 15 leaders, comprising five joint coordinators and 10 other members, have stepped down from the Nakla Upazila Coordination Committee in Sherpur district, rejecting the newly formed body.
The departing members have accused the newly appointed chief coordinator of being incompetent, unethical, and socially unacceptable, as reported by local media.
During a press conference held in Nakla Upazila, the leaders declared their resignations. “The chief coordinator of the National Citizens Party (NCP) Upazila is an incompetent, unethical, and socially unacceptable individual. After careful introspection, we are collectively resigning from our positions in the Upazila Coordination Committee and rejecting the entire committee,” stated the press release.
Joint Coordinator Mominul Islam Arab remarked, “We have five joint coordinators and 10 members who have resigned. Our primary concern is the main coordinator's incompetence. He has been accused of accepting money from the families of victims of last year’s July protests. Additionally, his educational credentials are questionable. These serious allegations prompted our resignation,” as quoted by Bangladesh's prominent Bengali daily Jugantor.
Previously, on August 10, the Nakla Upazila Coordination Committee was approved by NCP’s Central Convening Committee Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain and Chief Organiser (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam. The newly formed 32-member body included Humayun Kabir Akash as the Chief Coordinator, along with 10 Joint Coordinators and 21 members.
In response to the resignations, Alamgir Kabir, coordinator of NCP's Sherpur district committee, stated, “I learned about the resignations through Facebook. I have communicated with the divisional committee, and the district committee will convene to assess the situation and make further decisions.”
Earlier this year, controversial student leader Nahid Islam, associated with Student Against Discrimination and a key figure in last year's July uprising, announced the establishment of the NCP.
These student leaders previously collaborated with Muhammad Yunus and various political groups to challenge the democratically elected Awami League government, led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
