Who is the Newly Elected Floor Leader of South Korea's Ruling Party?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, Jan 11 (NationPress) The ruling Democratic Party (DP) has appointed Han Byung-do, a lawmaker with three terms under his belt, as its new floor leader on Sunday. This decision comes just days after his predecessor stepped down amidst growing allegations of misconduct.
Han, who represents the southwestern city of Iksan, triumphed in a runoff against Representative Back Hye-ryun, following an initial vote where none of the four candidates achieved a majority, as reported by the Yonhap News Agency.
The first round combined votes from DP representatives and an online poll among general party members, with the results weighted at 8:2.
The other two contenders in the initial round included Representatives Jin Sung-joon and Park Jeung.
In his acceptance speech at a general meeting of DP lawmakers at the National Assembly, Han stated, “I will accelerate state tasks and promptly enhance the welfare of our citizens to ensure the success of the Lee Jae Myung administration.”
He added, “From this moment on, I will urgently address the ongoing confusion, work to end the insurrection, reform the prosecution and judiciary, and improve the quality of life for our people.” This reference to “confusion” likely alludes to internal party disputes linked to bribery accusations against his predecessor, Rep. Kim Byung-kee, and former DP lawmaker Kang Sun-woo.
Han has previously been a senior political secretary to former President Moon Jae-in and is viewed as a vital member of the pro-Moon faction. He subsequently held roles as the chief of strategy and planning for then DP leader Lee Jae Myung and as operations room chief during Lee's presidential campaign last year.
The election for the floor leader occurred after Kim resigned last month due to allegations of preferential treatment and abuse of power, among other accusations.
Han will fulfill the remainder of Kim's term until May.
On the same day, the DP conducted a vote to appoint three new members to its supreme council, filling seats left by those who resigned to participate in regional elections scheduled for June. Representatives Kang Deuk-gu, Lee Sung-yoon, and Moon Jeong-bog were elected, ranking first to third, while Representative Lee Geon-tae withdrew after placing fourth.
