Bridgetown, Oct 9 (NationPress) Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla presided over a workshop titled 'Leveraging Technology: Enhancing Democracy through Transformations and Tackling the Digital Divide' during the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Barbados. He highlighted that India, representing 60 percent of the Commonwealth's populace, remains a steadfast advocate for democracy, inclusive growth, and human rights, while actively participating in programs like the Commonwealth Youth Programme and the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation.
“India is honored to engage in initiatives such as the Commonwealth Youth Programme and Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation,” Birla shared on X on Thursday.
During the workshop, he pointed out India’s pioneering role in climate action, stating, “We have achieved our carbon intensity reduction goals ahead of time and are progressing with initiatives like the Green Hydrogen Mission and solar parks.”
Furthermore, he emphasized India’s advancements in digital transformation, empowerment of women and youth, and enhancing citizen engagement—fostering transparency, sustainability, and inclusive growth.
Earlier, Birla participated in the opening ceremony of the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Barbados, alongside speakers and leaders from various nations.
Under the theme 'The Commonwealth - A Global Partner', the conference highlighted the significance of dialogue, cooperation, and shared democratic values in cultivating a fairer and more inclusive global community.
An Indian Parliamentary delegation, led by Birla, arrived in Bridgetown, Barbados, on Tuesday to engage in the parliamentary conference, which will run until October 12.
The Indian delegation includes Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Harivansh Narayan Singh; Lok Sabha MPs Anurag Sharma, D. Purandeswari, K. Sudhakar; Rajya Sabha MPs Rekha Sharma, Ajeet Madhavrao Gopchade; along with Secretary General of Lok Sabha Utpal Kumar Singh and Secretary General of Rajya Sabha P.C. Mody.
Birla is also anticipated to meet with Barbados leadership and engage with the Indian diaspora during his time in Barbados.
