Over 100 Pakistani Nationals Lost While Illegally Migrating in 2025
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Islamabad, April 2 (NationPress) A total of 109 Pakistani citizens were among at least 2,722 individuals from the Asia-Pacific region who either died or went missing globally in 2025 while attempting to cross borders illegally, according to reports from Pakistani media referencing the latest data from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
This incident represents the second consecutive year that more than 2,700 people have lost their lives worldwide, highlighting the ongoing dangers faced by migrants and the critical need for enhanced protection for those on the move, as stated by the IOM, noted by Pakistan's prominent newspaper, Dawn. The statistics were compiled under the 'IOM Missing Migrants Project 2026'.
The highest fatalities were recorded among 1,540 individuals from Afghanistan, followed by 935 from Myanmar, with Pakistan ranking third with 109 nationals, and Bangladesh following with 80 individuals. The IOM cautioned that the actual number of migrant deaths could be significantly higher due to the secretive nature of irregular migrations and the challenges associated with tracking migration-related fatalities, as reported by Dawn.
In a related incident in March, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) of Pakistan offloaded two passengers from a flight at Multan International Airport due to their alleged attempt to misuse an Umrah visa to enter Europe, as reported by local news outlets.
An FIA spokesperson stated that immigration officials acted during routine checks at Multan airport. Two Pakistani nationals, Sikander Alam and Noor Islam, were en route to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah. However, initial investigations raised suspicions, leading officials to conduct a secondary screening for thorough profiling, as reported by Dawn.
Upon further investigation, officials discovered Moroccan visas in the passports of Alam and Islam. When questioned, the two admitted that their true destination was Spain, not Saudi Arabia.
The FIA officials noted that this case aligns with recent warnings from the FIA headquarters regarding the increasing number of individuals attempting to use Umrah visas as a disguise to illegally enter Europe via Morocco.
Following these revelations, both passengers were removed from the flight and taken to the FIA Composite Circle in Multan for additional inquiries.
