Jakarta, Dec 8 (NationPress) One individual has died, another is currently unaccounted for, and 49 passengers survived after a passenger vessel capsized in the waters off Indonesia's East Java province on Sunday.

The wooden vessel, named Kapal Layar Motor Fajar Lorena, sank around 1:10 p.m. local time in the waters of Situbondo regency after departing from a harbor in Sumenep regency.

The ship was en route to a port in Situbondo regency. Both regions are situated within East Java province, as reported by Muhamad Hariyadi, head of the provincial search and rescue office, according to Xinhua news agency.

According to the ship’s manifest, which indicated there were 51 people on board, one person has died, another remains missing, and 49 individuals survived the incident.

The rescue operation involved approximately 50 personnel from a combined rescue team, and efforts to locate the missing individual are still underway, he added. Hariyadi attributed the tragedy to severe weather conditions.

“The incident occurred due to adverse weather; there were significant waves,” he stated.

Indonesia’s meteorological, climatological, and geophysical agency has issued warnings about extreme weather patterns, including large waves and heavy rainfall that could jeopardize maritime safety.
