New Delhi, Oct 26 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the accelerating cooperation between India and ASEAN in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), maritime security, and the blue economy, officially announcing 2026 as the 'ASEAN-India Year of Maritime Cooperation.'
In his opening remarks at the ASEAN-India Summit, conducted virtually, PM Modi stated, "India has consistently supported its ASEAN allies during crises. Our collaboration in HADR, maritime security, and the blue economy is expanding rapidly. In recognition of this, we declare 2026 as the 'ASEAN-India Year of Maritime Cooperation.' Furthermore, we are enhancing our bilateral partnerships in fields such as education, tourism, science and technology, health, green energy, and cybersecurity. The 21st century is fundamentally our century, that of India and ASEAN."
Highlighting ASEAN as the cornerstone of India's Act East Policy, the Prime Minister affirmed New Delhi's commitment to ASEAN's central role.
He remarked that the India-ASEAN partnership is evolving into a "robust foundation for global stability and growth."
Underlining their shared historical connections and values, PM Modi noted, "Together, India and ASEAN represent nearly a quarter of the world's population. We share not only geography but also profound historical ties and common values. We are united as fellow travelers of the Global South. Our collaboration transcends commercial interests and is deeply cultural."
He added, "ASEAN serves as the cornerstone of India's Act East Policy. India has always championed ASEAN Centrality and its perspective on the Indo-Pacific. In these uncertain times, the India-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership continues to progress steadily, establishing a powerful foundation for global stability and growth."
PM Modi noted that this year's ASEAN Summit theme, 'Inclusivity and Sustainability,' reflects their collective efforts in areas like digital inclusion and ensuring food security amidst current challenges.
The Prime Minister congratulated Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for successfully hosting the ASEAN Summit.
He expressed gratitude to the Philippines' President, Bongbong Marcos, for coordinating India's participation and congratulated Timor-Leste for joining ASEAN.
