What Does PM Modi's Departure for Croatia Mean After the G7 Summit?

Ottawa, June 18 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for Croatia on Wednesday after concluding his significant visit to Canada, where he participated in the 51st Group of Seven (G7) Summit held in Kananaskis. This marks the inaugural visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Croatia, a crucial milestone in enhancing bilateral relations.

“I conclude a fruitful visit to Canada, expressing gratitude to the Canadian people and government for hosting a successful G7 Summit. It facilitated valuable discussions on various global challenges. We continue our commitment to fostering global peace, prosperity, and sustainability,” PM Modi shared on X prior to his departure for Croatia.

PM Modi's upcoming visit aims to strengthen political and economic ties with the European nation, presenting a vital opportunity to expand bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors such as trade, innovation, defense, ports, shipping, science and technology, cultural exchanges, and workforce mobility.

“This journey to Croatia will also highlight India's dedication to reinforcing its connections with partners within the European Union,” stated government officials.

During his visit, PM Modi is scheduled to meet with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic and President Zoran Milanovic. The Indian Prime Minister previously had brief interactions with PM Plenković during COP-26 in 2021 and at the virtual India-European Union Leaders Meeting the same year.

India and Croatia share strong cooperation in sectors like trade, investment, defense, and agriculture, alongside vibrant cultural exchanges and people-to-people ties. The bilateral trade between the two nations stands at approximately USD 300 million. Moreover, Indian investments in Croatia total around Euro 44.51 million (approximately USD 48 million), while Croatian investments in India amount to Euro 5.55 million (about USD 6 million).

In the area of Digital and Startup Ecosystem Cooperation, the India-Croatia Startup Bridge was inaugurated by HAMAG BICRO from Croatia and Startup India from India on December 20, 2021. Subsequently, the India-Croatia Startup 50-day challenge took place from April 10, 2022.

India has enjoyed historical ties with Croatia for centuries, with early visitors being missionaries. Currently, a Department of Indology has been active at the University of Zagreb for over 60 years, and there is significant interest in Yoga and Ayurveda in Croatia.

The Indian community in Croatia has evolved rapidly over the past three years due to demographic changes, with around 17,000 Indians residing in Croatia as of December. Many Indian workers are on short to medium-term contracts, with approximately 90 percent of them being part of the mobile population.

“On June 18, I am eager for my visit to the Republic of Croatia and meetings with President Zoran Milanovic and Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic. Our countries have enjoyed close cultural ties for centuries. This historic visit by an Indian Prime Minister will pave the way for enhanced bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual benefit,” PM Modi said on Sunday as he commenced his three-nation tour.

“My journey to Croatia, the first by an Indian Prime Minister, offers a historic opportunity to strengthen connections with a valued partner nation,” PM Modi remarked.
