Upon arrival at Ezeiza International Airport, he received a formal ceremonial welcome.

This marks the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Argentina in 57 years, making it a historic occasion.

“I have arrived in Buenos Aires for a bilateral engagement aimed at strengthening ties with Argentina. I look forward to discussions with President Javier Milei,” PM Modi stated in a post on his official X account.

The Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, also highlighted this significant visit on social media, expressing that it opens a new chapter in India-Argentina relations.

Prior to this, PM Modi successfully visited Ghana and Trinidad & Tobago.

His stay in Argentina is scheduled for July 4 and 5, following an invitation from President Javier Milei.

The last interaction between these leaders occurred in November 2024 during the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Although PM Modi visited Argentina in 2018 for the G20 Summit, this visit is particularly significant. In a statement prior to his five-nation tour, the Prime Minister emphasized Argentina's role as a key economic ally in Latin America and a close collaborator within the G20.

The relationship between the two nations has grown robustly over various sectors and has been strengthened over decades.

In 2019, their ties were upgraded to a Strategic Partnership, and both nations celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2024.

The cultural connection between India and Argentina is also strong, with Yoga, Ayurveda, and Indian philosophy gaining popularity.

As part of his itinerary, PM Modi will pay homage at the statue of General Jose de San Martin, a celebrated national hero of Argentina.

A ceremonial welcome awaits him, followed by delegation talks and a lunch hosted by President Milei.

This visit is anticipated to deepen the strategic partnership and open new avenues for collaboration in various fields including trade and investment, health and pharmaceuticals, defense and security infrastructure, mining and mineral resources, agriculture and food security, green energy, ICT, digital innovation, disaster management, science and technology, education, and people-to-people linkages.

PM Modi’s visit comes at a critical juncture as Argentina is implementing significant economic reforms, akin to those India has previously undertaken.

India’s progress in sectors such as defense manufacturing, space, information technology, and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) can greatly benefit Argentina.

Moreover, India's proficiency in telemedicine and digital healthcare solutions can provide Argentina with affordable and quality healthcare access.

Argentina possesses the world's second-largest shale gas reserves and the fourth-largest shale oil reserves, along with substantial conventional oil and gas deposits, marking it as a significant energy partner for India in the future.

Additionally, Argentina's abundant reserves of critical minerals like lithium, copper, and other rare earth elements align with India's growing demand for secure and sustainable resources for clean energy transition and industrial growth. Together with Bolivia and Chile, Argentina is part of the Lithium Triangle.

Lithium is essential for modern technologies, especially in rechargeable batteries, and is a crucial component for electric vehicles, portable electronics, and energy storage systems for renewable sources. Indian enterprises like Khanij Bidesh India Ltd and Coal India Ltd have secured certain concessions in Argentina's Catamarca province.

The two leaders are expected to discuss cooperation in this essential sector during their meeting.

Following his time in Argentina, PM Modi will head to Brazil for the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro and then proceed to Namibia, the final destination of this tour.
