Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dhaka, Jan 9 (NationPress) The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) expressed grave concerns regarding the law and order situation in the nation as the February elections approach, criticizing the performance of law enforcement agencies under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, as reported by local media.
According to Bangladeshi media outlet UNB, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated during a press conference at his residence in Thakurgaon district, “The rate at which political leaders are being killed, particularly our party leaders, is indeed alarming.”
“We have condemned these murders vehemently, but the government has yet to take any meaningful action. We expect the authorities to act responsibly to prevent such incidents as we head into the elections,” he added.
In a tragic incident, a member of BNP’s youth wing, Jubo Dal, was fatally attacked late Thursday night in Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat district. His younger brother was also injured, according to local media reports.
The victim, identified as 31-year-old Yanul Hossain, was a noted member of Jubo Dal, while his 22-year-old brother, Abdul Momin, suffered injuries during the assault.
This event underscores the deteriorating law and order situation and increasing political violence in Bangladesh as the February 12 elections draw near.
Local sources informed UNB that the brothers were attacked by political rivals, resulting in Yanul’s death after being rushed to Mahipur Upazila Health Complex, while Momin received treatment for his injuries.
Hafiz Raihan, officer-in-charge of Panchbibi Police Station, confirmed that an investigation is underway to uncover the motive behind this killing.
Earlier on Wednesday night, a leader from BNP’s voluntary wing, Jatiyatabadi Swechasebak Dal, was shot dead in Dhaka. Azizur Rahman Mosabbir, a Joint Convener of the Swechasebak Dal's Dhaka North unit, was reportedly having tea when armed assailants arrived on motorcycles, indiscriminately firing and fleeing.
According to local media, both leaders were first taken to BRB Hospital in Panthapath and later to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where Mosabbir was declared dead by doctors.
Another individual, identified as Abu Sufian Bepari Masud, the General Secretary of the Tejgaon Police Station Van Workers Union, was injured in the incident and is currently hospitalized.
Following the shooting, an angry mob blocked the SAARC Foara intersection in Karwan Bazar, disrupting traffic until the army intervened to clear the protesters around 10:30 pm, as reported by leading Bangla daily Prothom Alo.
Since the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government took office in August 2024, Bangladesh has faced escalating protests and a deteriorating law and order situation.
