Kuala Lumpur, Oct 30 (NationPress) India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh landed in Malaysia on Thursday for a two-day visit aimed at participating in the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting - Plus (ADMM-Plus). He was welcomed at the Subang Airbase by India's High Commissioner to Malaysia, B N Reddy.
The 12th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting - Plus is set to take place in Kuala Lumpur on November 1. Singh will address the assembly on the topic of ‘Reflection on 15 years of ADMM-Plus and Charting the Way Forward’.
Additionally, on October 31, the second edition of the ASEAN-India Defence Ministers’ Informal Meeting, chaired by Malaysia, will be held, with Defence Ministers from all ASEAN member nations participating. This meeting is designed to enhance defence and security collaboration between ASEAN nations and India and to promote the Act East Policy, according to a statement from the Defence Ministry.
During his stay in Kuala Lumpur, Singh is slated to engage in bilateral discussions with his counterparts from the ADMM-Plus nations and senior officials from Malaysia.
The ADMM serves as the premier defence consultative and cooperative framework within ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). The ADMM-Plus platform includes all ASEAN member states (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam) along with eight Dialogue Partners (India, the US, China, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand) to bolster security and defence collaboration.
India joined as an ASEAN dialogue partner in 1992, and the inaugural ADMM-Plus convened in Hanoi, Vietnam on October 12, 2010. Since 2017, ADMM-Plus has been an annual event aimed at enhancing defence relations between ASEAN and its partner countries. Under the ADMM-Plus framework, India co-chairs the Experts Working Group on Counter Terrorism with Malaysia for the 2024-2027 cycle. Additionally, the second iteration of the ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise is planned for 2026.
