New Delhi, Sep 20 (NationPress) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to commence a two-day official journey to Morocco from September 22-23, as part of efforts to enhance the deepening strategic ties between India and the North African nation, as announced by the Ministry of Defence on Saturday.
This visit, at the invitation of Morocco's Minister Delegate of National Defence, Abdeltif Loudiyi, will be the inaugural trip by an Indian Defence Minister to this North African country.
According to the Ministry of Defence, a significant highlight of the visit will be the inauguration of Tata Advanced Systems Maroc's new manufacturing plant for the Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) 8x8 in Berrechid.
This facility represents the first-ever Indian defence manufacturing unit in Africa, symbolizing a crucial milestone that underscores the expanding global presence of India's defence sector under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, as stated by the Ministry.
During his visit, Singh will engage in a bilateral meeting with Loudiyi to reinforce cooperation in defence, strategy, and industry. He will also meet with Morocco's Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, to discuss potential industrial collaboration.
Additionally, the Defence Minister will connect with the thriving Indian community in Rabat, Morocco's capital.
Both nations are anticipated to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focusing on Defence Cooperation, which will establish a framework to enhance and broaden bilateral defence relations, encompassing exchanges, training, and industrial partnerships. Indian Navy vessels have consistently visited Casablanca in recent years, and this agreement is expected to further solidify such connections, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defence.
The relationship between India and Morocco has experienced significant growth since Moroccan King Mohammed VI met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015 during a visit to India.
The forthcoming visit is projected to inject renewed vigor into this partnership, particularly in defence and strategic domains, the statement remarked.
In August, as part of the defence collaboration between the two nations, the Indian Navy's newest stealth frigate, INS Tamal, completed a three-day port visit to Casablanca.
The port visit to Casablanca underscores the importance India places on its relations with Morocco and aims to strengthen the growing defence cooperation between both nations. It also provided a platform for both navies to exchange best practices and explore new avenues for collaboration, as noted by the Defence Ministry.
