New Delhi, Sep 23 (NationPress) Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) officially launched a cutting-edge defence manufacturing facility in Berrechid, located in the Casablanca region of Morocco. This significant event marks the inaugural overseas defence production site established by a private Indian firm.
This advancement underscores India’s expanding capability to design and deliver sophisticated combat vehicle systems in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The inauguration was officiated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh alongside Abdeltif Loudyi, Morocco’s Minister Delegate responsible for National Defence Administration, with senior officials from both nations in attendance.
Spanning an impressive 20,000 square metres, this facility holds the title of the largest defence manufacturing site within the Kingdom of Morocco.
In partnership with the Moroccan government, Tata Advanced Systems is set to produce and supply the Wheeled Armoured Platform 8x8 (WhAP 8x8).
Notably, the facility commenced operations three months ahead of its planned schedule, with production already underway. The initial deliveries are anticipated to begin next month.
This plant has played a crucial role in generating both direct and indirect employment opportunities, establishing a robust supplier network, enhancing critical technological capabilities, and providing in-country product support.
Additionally, it is collaborating with ancillary partners who supply subsystems and essential technologies.
Sukaran Singh, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Advanced Systems, expressed that this inauguration signifies a pivotal milestone.
“As the first overseas manufacturing unit operated by a private Indian defence OEM, it exemplifies our strategic initiative to deliver India-designed defence technology systems to allied nations globally,” Singh remarked.
“The launch of this defence factory near Casablanca in Morocco opens a new chapter in the India-Morocco industrial collaboration, and Tata Advanced Systems is honored to be part of this significant achievement,” he added.
Initially, the facility will cater to the Royal Moroccan Army, with aspirations to broaden exports to other allied nations, particularly throughout Africa.
The WhAP 8x8, co-developed by DRDO and Tata, is a versatile, multi-role armoured vehicle designed for mobility, survivability, and adaptability in various combat scenarios.
Equipped with a powerful engine, independent suspension, central tyre inflation system, and a protective monocoque hull that offers scalable ballistic and mine protection, the vehicle can be tailored for multiple roles, including infantry fighting vehicle, armoured personnel carrier, reconnaissance, command, mortar carrier, and ambulance.
It also provides options for remote weapon stations, anti-tank guided missile capabilities, and amphibious operations.
