Seoul, Jan 18 (NationPress) The national space agency of South Korea is set to present its strategic plan designed to enhance the nation's aerospace capabilities in the upcoming month, as stated by its leader.
Yoon Young-bin, the head of the Korean AeroSpace Administration (KASA), revealed the initiative during a New Year event attended by aerospace industry stakeholders, as reported by the Yonhap news agency.
"We will formulate a strategy to establish a private-led aerospace economy, incorporating projects aimed at developing space vehicles like Nuri space rockets, future-oriented aircraft, and sophisticated satellites, all in an effort to enhance the competitiveness of our local space industry on a global scale," he noted.
"The competition within the international aerospace sector is intensifying due to the emergence of new powers and the acceleration of private-driven growth," he added.
Specifically, KASA intends to devise plans for the development of homegrown technologies related to reusable rockets and aircraft gas turbine engines.
Additionally, the agency will establish a comprehensive business strategy for creating the world’s first space observatory at L4, one of the stable Lagrange points, according to Yoon.
Lagrange points are locations in space where the gravitational forces of two celestial bodies, such as the sun and Earth, create stable zones, allowing spacecraft to conduct exploration missions with minimal fuel usage.
Previously, KASA representatives met with their counterparts at the European Space Agency (ESA) to discuss various strategies for enhancing bilateral cooperation in the space domain, as stated by the agency.
Moreover, the country has officially designated May 27 as Aerospace Day to commemorate the establishment of KASA.
This designation aims to support the nation’s ambition of becoming one of the top five global leaders in the aerospace sector and fostering a robust space economy, according to the report.
