South Africa Enhances Border Law Enforcement with Mozambique in Response to Protests

Johannesburg, Dec 30 (NationPress) South Africa has intensified law enforcement activities at its border with Mozambique in light of the post-election protests occurring in the adjacent country.
In a declaration released on Sunday by the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), the South African government voiced its concerns regarding the persistent protests in various regions of Mozambique and the reports of individuals fleeing from a maximum-security prison during this tumultuous period, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
"These developments have understandably sparked worries among South African citizens concerning the potential cross-border ramifications," stated the GCIS.
On Monday, Mozambique's Constitutional Council declared Daniel Chapo, the ruling party Frelimo's presidential candidate, as the victor of the general elections held on October 9. Local media sources indicate that over 100 civilians have lost their lives amid the turmoil following the elections, with hundreds more sustaining injuries.
In its statement, the South African government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens and maintaining regional stability.
"In line with this commitment, the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has escalated its operations along the South Africa-Mozambique border. These actions are designed to prevent and tackle any opportunistic crimes that might arise due to the unrest, both during and following the protests," the statement detailed.
NATJOINTS, which includes various government departments and is headed by the State Security Agency, South African Police Service, and South African National Defense Force, is tasked with safeguarding the nation's safety and security.
The South African government also mentioned that it is taking steps as a nation and within the region to resolve the deadlock in Mozambique. "The government of South Africa is actively collaborating with the government of Mozambique on a bilateral basis to address these issues and seek lasting solutions."
"The government acknowledges the interconnected nature of regional security and is resolute in fulfilling its duties to promote peace and stability in southern Africa," it added, emphasizing South Africa's commitment to assist Mozambique in restoring peace and stability for the safety of all.
Furthermore, the South African government urged its citizens to remain composed and to avoid disseminating unverified information that could incite unwarranted panic. "The relevant authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will provide timely updates as new information emerges."
