South Korea: Opposition Parties Initiate Impeachment Proceedings Against Yoon Following Martial Law Controversy

Seoul, Dec 4 (NationPress) Opposition factions in South Korea have initiated a motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol on Wednesday after lawmakers successfully blocked Yoon's declaration of martial law.
The primary opposition Democratic Party along with five other smaller opposition parties, including the Rebuilding Korea Party and the Reform Party, submitted the motion to the bills office at the National Assembly at 2:43 pm, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
This impeachment motion received signatures from 190 opposition lawmakers and one independent lawmaker, with no backing from any members of the ruling party.
The opposition parties intend to present the motion to a parliamentary plenary session on Thursday, aiming for a vote on either Friday or Saturday.
According to legal requirements, an impeachment motion must undergo a vote within 24 to 72 hours after being reported to a plenary session.
Representative Shin Chang-sik from the Rebuilding Korea Party indicated that the parties have yet to determine whether to vote 'immediately' or at another time 'within 72 hours.'
The impeachment motion necessitates a two-thirds majority to be successful in parliament. Out of the 300-member National Assembly, the opposition will need eight votes from the ruling People Power Party to pass the legislation.
