South Korea: Security Detail Assigned to Prime Minister as He Takes on Acting Presidential Role

Seoul, Dec 14 (NationPress) The Presidential Security Service (PSS) of South Korea declared on Saturday that it has designated a security team for Prime Minister Han Duck-soo as he steps into the role of acting President after the National Assembly voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The PSS will work closely with the Prime Minister's Office to develop comprehensive security plans before initiating their responsibilities.
Both Han and his spouse will receive security measures comparable to those afforded to the President, while the security arrangements for Yoon will remain unchanged, adhering to applicable laws, according to reports from Yonhap news agency.
Yoon's responsibilities will be immediately paused once the impeachment resolution reaches his office.
In a significant move on Saturday, the National Assembly of South Korea voted to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol due to his mishandling of martial law.
Yoon will be suspended from his roles as soon as the impeachment resolution is delivered to his office, with Prime Minister Han Duck-soo stepping in as Acting President.
The impeachment motion saw a vote of 204-85, with three abstentions and eight invalid ballots, as all 300 lawmakers participated in the voting process.
The People Power Party (PPP) of Yoon decided to engage in the vote shortly before it commenced, despite opposing the impeachment.
This outcome indicated that 12 PPP lawmakers diverged from their party's stance to support the impeachment.
A two-thirds majority was necessary for the motion's approval, with the Opposition bloc comprising 192 of the 300 parliamentary members.
The initial impeachment attempt against Yoon the previous Saturday was unsuccessful as nearly all PPP lawmakers boycotted the vote.
A second impeachment motion was put forth on Thursday by the principal Opposition Democratic Party along with five other minor Opposition parties, accusing Yoon of breaching the Constitution and other laws by declaring martial law on December 3. This declaration was revoked six hours later following the Assembly's vote to annul it.
The second motion was modified from the first to eliminate some allegations against Yoon while incorporating new ones, including accusations that Yoon directed troops and police to arrest lawmakers during the martial law period.
This motion will be forwarded to the Constitutional Court, which will make a determination on whether to reinstate Yoon or remove him from his position.
If the impeachment is upheld, Yoon will become the second President to be ousted, following former President Park Geun-hye in 2017.
