Seoul, July 3 (NationPress) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung engaged in discussions with Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), on Thursday, focusing on strategies to enhance Seoul's collaboration with the multinational military alliance, according to Lee's office.
The conversation between Lee and Rutte took place following a recent agreement between Seoul and NATO to set up a working-level consultative body aimed at fostering cooperation in the defence sector.
Last week, South Korea and NATO reached an agreement to create this consultative body during a meeting between National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac and NATO's Secretary General Mark Rutte at the NATO summit in The Hague.
During their meeting, Wi conveyed a personal letter from President Lee Jae Myung, which outlined the reasons for his absence at this year's summit and reaffirmed his dedication to strengthening the partnership between South Korea and NATO, according to a release from the office.
“Wi expressed optimism that the Republic of Korea and NATO, which uphold the values of democracy and peace, will engage in active cooperation to tackle complex global challenges,” the office stated.
Wi also emphasized the significant potential for enhanced collaboration within the defence industry, highlighting South Korea's advanced defence capabilities, as reported by the Yonhap news agency.
“Both parties concurred on establishing a new director-general level South Korea-NATO defence industry consultation body to explore specific measures for bolstering cooperation in the defence sector,” it noted.
On June 25, Wi also participated in a separate session with Rutte and representatives from three other Indo-Pacific partners—Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
The partners committed to continuing advanced collaboration in securing supply chains, along with defence development, production, and procurement, pledging to work jointly on projects in space and maritime domains, as well as in munitions, according to the statement.
