South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol Skips Corruption Investigation Office Summons Regarding Martial Law

Seoul, Dec 18 (NationPress) South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol did not attend the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) for High-ranking Officials on Wednesday, defying a summons for questioning concerning his brief declaration of martial law.

Yoon was requested by a joint investigative team comprised of the CIO, the police, and the Defense Ministry's investigative unit to appear at the CIO's office located in Gwacheon, just south of Seoul, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

He is facing allegations of inciting an insurrection through his declaration of martial law on December 3 and has been suspended from his duties while awaiting a trial by the Constitutional Court regarding his impeachment by the National Assembly.

Several attempts to deliver the summons to Yoon were unsuccessful earlier this week, as the presidential office declined to accept it and returned the mail.

CIO chief Oh Dong-woon informed the National Assembly's legislation committee on Tuesday that the summons was being rejected intentionally and that his agency would promptly take lawful measures in response.

Oh mentioned that the CIO was evaluating whether the criteria were met to seek an arrest warrant against Yoon, asserting that pursuing this course of action was most aligned with lawful procedures, instead of attempting an emergency arrest without a warrant.

The CIO is also contemplating issuing a second summons.

The prosecution, which is conducting a separate investigation into the martial law issue, has requested Yoon's appearance for questioning on Saturday after he ignored an earlier summons on Sunday.
