Khartoum, June 16 (NationPress) The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) announced that they successfully thwarted an assault by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State. Meanwhile, local officials reported the tragic loss of five displaced civilians due to an RSF attack on a shelter for the displaced.
The SAF’s 6th Infantry Division stated, "The armed forces, supported by allied forces, effectively countered a desperate offensive from the rebel militia early Sunday in El Fasher."
As per the statement, SAF forces managed to dismantle a significant portion of the attacking group, causing severe casualties, which included the destruction of armored vehicles and numerous fatalities and injuries.
In a separate report, the Governor of North Darfur State, Al-Hafiz Bakhit, disclosed that 35 displaced civilians were either killed or injured as a result of the RSF's shelling of a shelter in El Fasher, according to Xinhua news agency.
"The RSF militia shelled a displacement shelter located at the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources, leading to five deaths and injuries to 30 others," the governor stated.
As of now, the RSF has not provided any comments regarding the incidents in El Fasher.
Intense confrontations have been ongoing in El Fasher between the SAF and RSF since May 10, 2024.
El Fasher is recognized as the administrative center of the Darfur region, which includes five states. It is the largest city in the region and is currently the only state capital not under RSF control.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a devastating conflict between the SAF and RSF, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and displacing millions, both within and outside the country's borders.
