Syria's Interim Foreign Minister Hails First Visit to Saudi Arabia as 'Historic'

Damascus, Jan 3 (NationPress) Syria's interim Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani on Friday referred to his recently completed visit to Saudi Arabia, his first official journey outside the country in his current role, as historic.
In a series of updates on the social media platform X, al-Shaibani conveyed that during this visit, he introduced Syria's national vision to the Saudi officials, focusing on establishing an inclusive government that encompasses all sections of the Syrian populace, based on partnership and competence. He also expressed the Syrian government's ambition to initiate an economic development plan aimed at attracting foreign investments, forging strategic alliances, and enhancing living standards.
He emphasized Syria's potential to play a constructive role in the region by collaborating with neighboring Arab nations on collective policies to strengthen security and economic growth.
Simultaneously, the Saudi Foreign Ministry announced on X that during a meeting between Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud and al-Shaibani, they deliberated on recent developments in Syria and efforts to address these issues, along with ways to support initiatives aimed at securing a prosperous future for Syria and its citizens.
The discussions also revolved around the preservation of Syrian state institutions, enhancing their capabilities, and reinstating Syria to its rightful position within the Arab and Islamic communities.
The Saudi minister reaffirmed the Kingdom's commitment to supporting all measures that would ensure Syria's security and stability while maintaining its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.
Al-Shaibani's inaugural foreign visit, which commenced late on Wednesday upon his arrival at Riyadh's international airport, occurred as Syria navigates a delicate political transition following the fall of the previous government on December 8, 2024.
In another development, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and her French counterpart Jean-Noel Barrot also arrived in Damascus on Friday for high-level discussions with Syria's interim government, headed by Ahmed al-Sharaa.
This meeting signifies one of the most pivotal Western diplomatic visits since the previous government’s collapse.
According to local media outlets such as al-Watan Online and Syria TV, Baerbock noted that the EU perceives potential for a new political relationship with Syria, highlighting that Syrians now possess an opportunity to reclaim their nation's destiny following the tumultuous Assad era.
She stated that Germany aims to support the new administration in achieving a comprehensive and peaceful transition of power and assist with reconstruction.
Barrot reiterated a commitment to supporting Syria's journey towards stability, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
“Our objective is to facilitate a peaceful transition that benefits both the Syrian populace and the regional security,” remarked the French minister.
The two officials are scheduled to meet with al-Sharaa, the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.
Since December 8, numerous Arab and Western diplomatic delegations, including Americans, have visited Syria to engage with the new authorities.
On Wednesday, Oman's Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi emphasized the significance of mutual cooperation and endeavors for development and stability in Syria and the broader region.
During a phone conversation with Syria's interim Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani, Albusaidi reaffirmed Oman's steadfast support for the Syrian people.
He underscored Oman's dedication to maintaining Syria's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, as reported by the Oman News Agency.
The ministers also explored the historical connections between the Omani and Syrian peoples and discussed avenues to enhance these ties.
