Bangkok, Jan 19 (NationPress) In anticipation of the Spring Festival, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has conveyed her Lunar New Year wishes, emphasizing the cultural connection between Thailand and China, which she believes will foster stronger relationships between the two nations.

"Lunar New Year is a significant occasion where families unite to celebrate and reflect on the past year, while also wishing for a prosperous year ahead," she stated in a video message in English, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.

With the Spring Festival being celebrated throughout China and among the Thai population of Chinese descent, who form a considerable segment of Thailand's demographic, Paetongtarn remarked that it is "a festival that embodies the enduring cultural ties between Thai and Chinese communities."

"I am confident that this connection will continue to grow, resulting in enhanced friendship and collaboration between Thailand and China for the benefit of our citizens," the Prime Minister added.

"On this occasion, I wish everyone good health, joy, and success in the upcoming Lunar New Year," she expressed.

The official relations between China and Thailand began in July 1975 following extensive negotiations. Historically, Thailand, once known as Siam, maintained positive relations with China, which was held in high regard in Siam, facilitating the alliance of both nations. However, relations suffered significantly when Plaek Phibunsongkhram attempted to suppress Chinese culture and influence in Thailand.

Currently, a power struggle between the U.S. and China may be unfolding due to the increasing presence of both nations in Thailand. Nevertheless, Thailand does not perceive China as a threat, unlike Washington, and has no territorial disputes with China, distinguishing it from numerous other countries in the region. China continues to be a vital ally to Thailand, largely due to its influence and standing in the area.
