Bangui, June 26 (NationPress) Close to 20 individuals lost their lives and numerous others were injured due to a stampede instigated by an explosion from a power transformer at Barthelemy Boganda High School in Bangui, the capital city of the Central African Republic (CAR), as reported by the country's National Assembly on Thursday.
The National Assembly indicated that the explosion incited panic among exam candidates, leading to the stampede as they tried to escape. Victims were transported to various healthcare facilities throughout the capital.
"We were in the midst of our examination when a loud explosion erupted. Everyone began to flee in every direction. Many classmates collapsed and were unable to rise," recounted Rufin Pandama, a student who witnessed the incident.
The examination centers within the school had a total of 5,311 candidates. An official and detailed casualty report has yet to be published. Local media indicated that the calamity resulted in the deaths of at least 29 students.
As per a statement released on Wednesday by the Ministry of National Education, a team from Energie Centrafricaine (ENERCA) was sent to perform repairs following a technical malfunction earlier that day. The explosion occurred as power was being restored, according to Xinhua news agency.
In a video message, CAR President Faustin-Archange Touadera announced a three-day national mourning period commencing Thursday, in honor of the victims of this tragic explosion.
