New Delhi/Bengaluru, July 4 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday conveyed his sorrow regarding the stampede incident close to the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, which tragically claimed at least 11 lives and left over 30 injured. This unfortunate event unfolded as fans rushed to enter the stadium for a celebration event commemorating RCB's inaugural IPL trophy victory.

In a statement shared via X, the PMO, quoting the Prime Minister, expressed: “The incident in Bengaluru is deeply distressing. During this sorrowful period, my thoughts are with all those grieving the loss of their loved ones. I sincerely hope for a swift recovery for the injured.”

The stampede erupted as thousands of fans hurriedly attempted to access the stadium from multiple entry points. Authorities at the scene quickly arranged for ambulances to transport the injured to the nearby Bowring Hospital.

However, police reported that the ambulances faced delays in reaching the hospital due to heavy congestion on the roads.

Prior to the event, the Karnataka government had canceled the victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium, citing safety concerns.

Law enforcement indicated that they had been managing the celebratory crowds since Tuesday night, working diligently to prevent any disturbances.

The Karnataka government confirmed that the stampede resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals and injuries to over 30 others. A compensation of Rs 10 lakh has been announced for the families of the deceased, alongside a directive for a magisterial inquiry.

In a press conference held in Bengaluru, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah remarked: "A significant tragedy has occurred during the victory celebration. Eleven lives have been lost, and 33 individuals are injured."

“I visited Bowring and Vaidehi hospitals. This calamity, occurring amidst a celebration, deeply saddens me. The turnout exceeded our expectations, with one lakh individuals gathering at Vidhana Soudha. Although the Chinnaswamy Stadium accommodates 35,000, approximately 2 to 3 lakh people converged at the venue,” he stated.

“No one anticipated such a turnout. We initially expected slightly more than the stadium's capacity. Tragically, most of the deceased were young individuals. We are providing Rs 10 lakh compensation to each bereaved family. The injured will receive free medical care,” Siddaramaiah added.

Medical professionals have confirmed that all injured parties are currently out of danger.

“I extend my prayers for the souls of the deceased and their families. I am initiating a magisterial inquiry into the incident, and appropriate actions will be taken against those responsible,” he emphasized.

He stressed that this unexpected occurrence was unforeseen.
