New Delhi/Bengaluru, June 4 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi described the devastating stampede that occurred near Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium during the RCB’s inaugural IPL trophy celebration, which resulted in the loss of at least 11 lives, as profoundly heartbreaking.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families mourning their loved ones and wish a swift recovery to all those injured. In this time of sorrow, I stand in solidarity with the people of Bengaluru,” Rahul Gandhi expressed on X.
“The government of Karnataka must ensure that all necessary support and relief is provided to the affected families. This tragedy serves as a painful reminder that no celebration justifies the loss of human life. All safety protocols for public events must be reevaluated and strictly adhered to—human lives must always take precedence,” Rahul Gandhi emphasized.
Earlier, the Karnataka government had canceled the victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy Stadium due to security concerns.
According to police reports, they had been managing the crowd since Tuesday night, ensuring that no untoward incidents arose.
The government confirmed that at least 11 individuals were killed and over 30 injured in the stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium. In response, a compensation of Rs 10 lakh has been announced for the families of those deceased, along with a magisterial investigation.
During a press conference in Bengaluru, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah remarked: “A significant tragedy unfolded during the victory celebration. Eleven lives were lost in the stampede, and 33 individuals sustained injuries.”
“I have visited Bowring and Vaidehi hospitals. This incident, happening amidst a celebration, deeply saddens me. The turnout was massive, exceeding our forecasts. We estimated about one lakh people in front of Vidhana Soudha, while the Chinnaswamy Stadium has a capacity of 35,000, yet roughly 2 to 3 lakh people were present at the stadium,” the CM stated.
“The turnout was unexpected. We anticipated a crowd slightly above the stadium's capacity. Most of the deceased were young individuals. Each family of the deceased will receive Rs 10 lakh compensation, and those injured will receive free medical treatment,” Siddaramaiah added.
Doctors have confirmed that all injured individuals are currently out of danger.
“I pray for the souls of the departed and their families. I will initiate a magisterial inquiry into this incident, and action will be taken against anyone found responsible,” he asserted.
The Chief Minister highlighted that this was an unforeseen event, with no one anticipating such an outcome.
