New Delhi, June 4 (NationPress) BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla harshly criticized the Karnataka government on Wednesday after the celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) first IPL victory were overshadowed by a stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, leading to fears of numerous casualties.
Poonawalla referred to the event as a “state-sponsored tragedy,” claiming that the local administration displayed severe negligence and failed in crowd management.
“What transpired outside Chinnaswamy Stadium is a clear example of state-sponsored negligence, indifference, and even murder,” Poonawalla asserted.
“Did the Bengaluru police and Karnataka government not foresee the magnitude of this event? After 18 years, this victory was bound to attract a massive crowd eager to celebrate.”
He expressed concern over the inadequate preparation and security measures at the event.
“Where were the necessary arrangements? Where was the police presence? Where was the adherence to standard operating procedures? When the crowd assembled, they were met with forceful dispersal. It's appalling. Reports indicate that children, women, and men have tragically lost their lives. A joyful moment has transformed into a dreadful catastrophe. The Home Minister and Chief Minister must be held accountable. This occurred under their oversight,” he said.
“This is the authentic representation of the Congress government in Karnataka — the state of law and order, public administration, and even basic crowd management is in disarray. It is disgraceful,” Poonawalla concluded.
The incident transpired as thousands of fans surged toward the stadium to join the celebration for the RCB team, which secured the IPL 2025 trophy on Tuesday night.
Authorities confirmed that the deceased victims have been taken to Bowring Hospital and Vaidehi Hospital. Six individuals are currently in the ICU at Vaidehi, with three others in critical condition.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar visited Bowring Hospital to meet the injured and evaluate the situation.
The stampede reportedly occurred when fans rushed through several gates, overwhelming security personnel. Police transported the injured to ambulances, but traffic congestion and crowding hindered swift transportation to nearby hospitals.
Wednesday's incident recalls a similar event in 2024 when chaotic scenes erupted at Marine Drive in Maharashtra following Team India's T20 World Cup victory procession. An estimated 300,000 cricket fans gathered at Marine Drive to celebrate Team India's historic win, leading to injuries and property damage.
