Bengaluru, June 4 (NationPress) The government of Karnataka has reported that at least 11 individuals lost their lives and more than 30 others sustained injuries during a stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday. This tragic event occurred as a large crowd gathered to celebrate RCB's first-ever IPL trophy victory. In response, the government has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of those deceased and has ordered a magisterial inquiry.
During a press conference, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his sorrow stating, "A significant tragedy has unfolded during the victory celebration. Eleven people have tragically died in this stampede, and 33 individuals have been injured."
He further mentioned, "I have visited both Bowring and Vaidehi hospitals. It saddens me to see such a tragedy occurring amidst a joyous celebration. The turnout exceeded our expectations with one lakh people gathering outside Vidhana Soudha. Although Chinnaswamy Stadium can accommodate 35,000, approximately 2 to 3 lakh people were present at the venue," the CM remarked.
“This turnout was unforeseen. We anticipated slightly more than the stadium's capacity. Most of the deceased are young individuals. Each family of the deceased will receive Rs 10 lakh as compensation, and the injured will receive free medical care,” Siddaramaiah confirmed.
Doctors have assured that all injured persons are currently safe.
"I pray for the souls of the departed and their families. I am initiating a magisterial inquiry into this incident, and appropriate action will be taken against anyone found accountable," he stated.
He emphasized that this was an unpredicted incident that nobody foresaw.
When questioned about whether he was attempting to absolve authorities by deeming the incident unexpected, CM Siddaramaiah remarked that the media should refrain from questioning like an 'opposition party'.
“I indicated that the large turnout was unexpected. The magisterial investigation will reveal any security lapses or other failures. I have instructed them to present their report within 15 days,” he said.
In response to criticism from the BJP, CM Siddaramaiah stated that he does not wish to defend his government regarding these events. "I do not want to engage in politics over this. Let's await the results of the investigation," he concluded.
