Bengaluru, June 7 (NationPress) In a significant move, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced an increase in compensation for the families of the 11 victims who lost their lives in the tragic incident at Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4. The compensation will now be Rs 25 lakh for each family, an increase from the previously stated Rs 10 lakh.
Calls for higher compensation have come from Union Minister for Large and Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy, Union Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje, and the Karnataka BJP leadership, who have demanded Rs 50 lakh for the bereaved families.
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) franchise has pledged Rs 10 lakh for the deceased, while the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has offered Rs 5 lakh.
Moreover, the BJP has called for the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar in response to the incident.
On the other hand, Congress leaders are supporting CM Siddaramaiah by drawing parallels between this tragedy and other incidents like the Pahalgam terror attack and the Prayagraj stampede.
This incident has represented a significant blow to the Congress-led government in Karnataka, with the BJP criticizing the initial compensation of Rs 10 lakh as inadequate.
Minister for Higher Education M.C. Sudhakar expressed that CM Siddaramaiah is deeply saddened by the events. He stated, "We all are in mourning. This tragedy has caused immense sorrow to CM Siddaramaiah. No amount of compensation can replace lost lives or heal the pain of the affected families."
Minister Sudhakar further mentioned, "In my constituency, two young lives were lost. It’s heartbreaking. Such a celebration should not have occurred, especially as it was hastily arranged by the RCB management due to player commitments and not by the Congress-led government."
Meanwhile, the Special Wing of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has commenced its investigation into the stampede that resulted in 11 fatalities on June 4.
At the same time, a magisterial inquiry led by the Deputy Commissioner of the Bengaluru Urban district is ongoing. CID officials have visited Chinnaswamy Stadium to gather evidence.
The CID plans to request custody of the four arrested individuals for further questioning on Monday, June 9, having already filed a petition in court to that effect.
The FIR lodged by the Karnataka Police regarding the stampede accuses the involved parties—the RCB franchise, event management firm DNA, and the KSCA Administrative Committee—of organizing the victory celebration without the required permissions.
The FIR includes charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, such as culpable homicide, causing hurt, unlawful assembly, and negligent acts that endanger human life.
Additionally, a police complaint has been filed against cricketer Virat Kohli concerning the incident.
